As the White House has soured on\u00a0Israel\u2019s war with Hezbollah\u00a0in Lebanon, U.S. President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0has shocked many in the region by pushing an alternative: Let Syria fight the Iran-backed militant group instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has suggested that the battle-hardened and Islamist-led insurgents who\u00a0overthrew Syria\u2019s autocratic President Bashar Assad\u00a0a year and a half ago and formed a new government would do a better job of rooting out Hezbollah than the Israeli army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has said he has no interest in doing so, and has asserted that Trump\u2019s comments were misconstrued. But Trump has doubled down on the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although it remains unclear how serious the White House is about the proposal, the prospect of a Syrian invasion has raised alarms in Lebanon \u2014 and also in Israel, which regards al-Sharaa\u2019s Islamist-led government with suspicion and\u00a0has seized control of a strip of southern Syria\u00a0since he took power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Syria has also become the site of rising tensions between\u00a0Israel and Turkey\u00a0\u2014 a main backer of al-Sharaa\u2019s government \u2014 with each seeking to limit the other\u2019s influence in the neighboring country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
