Without wasting any words, they pinned him down and handcuffed him. One of them pulled out his service weapon and used the butt of the gun to repeatedly and violently strike him in the ribs from behind. The officers then took out a knife, slashed his tent and sleeping bag to shreds, and tossed them straight into the trash—his entire worldly possessions as a homeless person.

Wang Weiheng’s story began in 2022. Before that, he was from Handan, Hebei Province. He had worked as a firefighter before switching careers to the tech industry, where he became a project manager. He earned over 200,000 yuan a year, had more than 30,000 followers on Chinese social media, and owned a house and a car. In 2021, he lost everything in a cryptocurrency crash, leaving him with nearly 2 million yuan in debt. He blamed all these failures on the domestic environment in China, firmly believing that “even a dishwasher in the U.S. can afford a villa in a year.” In 2022, he sold off his remaining assets, scraped together some money, and decided to sneak into the U.S. via an illegal route.

His first symbolic act after successfully entering the country was to publicly tear up his Chinese passport at the Los Angeles airport. This signified that he had voluntarily severed his legal ties to his homeland, becoming an undocumented immigrant.

Life after arriving in the U.S. was far from smooth. He faced exorbitant medical bills (such as a 15-minute doctor’s visit costing thousands of dollars), a car accident while delivering food that resulted in a hefty claim and the impoundment of his vehicle, and a barrage of traffic tickets—all of which led to his complete financial and credit ruin.

Unable to adapt to American social norms and living conditions, and compounded by legal and visa issues, he eventually ended up on the streets. He was even attacked by a homeless person on the streets of California, sustaining serious injuries to his eyes and other parts of his body.

Under the weight of these pressures, his mental state gradually collapsed. His comments and stances on social media frequently shifted, accompanied by reports, accusations against others, and various radical statements.

The U.S. immigration system has strict legal channels. Someone like him—who entered the country illegally, lacks stable employment, and is burdened with massive debt and a criminal record—simply does not meet any of the requirements for applying for a green card.

If he had known this would happen, why did he even bother in the first place? He would have been better off staying in China!

At 8:00 a.m. on October 2, at a campsite in a park on the outskirts of Santa Cruz, California, Wang Weiheng was still sound asleep in his ragged tent when two police officers showed up at his doorstep.
