US convicted murderer Christa Pike remains critically ill in hospital and her prognosis is still unclear days after Tennessee authorities botched her execution by lethal injection, her lawyer said.<\/p>\n
The case of Pike, whose attempted execution on Wednesday had already been the subject of a high-profile legal battle, raised a number of questions, including what went wrong? And what happens next?<\/p>\n
A third-party review has been ordered by state Governor Bill Lee, who has halted executions in Tennessee for the rest of the year. The head of prisons in the state is also resigning after the failed execution.<\/p>\n
Pike was scheduled to be put to death in Tennessee on Wednesday evening local time. The injections were allowed by the Supreme Court at the 11th hour.<\/p>\n
She was given two injections of the drug pentobarbital, but her legal team said these failed to stop her heartbeat. As of Thursday night, she was unconscious, intubated and on a ventilator.<\/p>\n
Pike’s lawyers filedan emergency motion on Friday to preserve “any and all evidence” related to her botched execution.<\/p>\n
During the execution attempt, prison officials tried to start intravenous (IV) lines by using at least seven needles on Pike, according to her lawyers.<\/p>\n
While receiving the two doses, “she could be heard crying, whimpering, and breathing loudly”, her lawyers said.<\/p>\n
“At no point did any member of the execution team realise that the IV lines were not correctly placed or that the veins had blown and that the pentobarbital was, in whole or in part, entering Ms Pike’s body,” her lawyers said in the filing.<\/p>\n

Her lawyers had warned something like this might occur.<\/p>\n
In January, Pike’s legal team fileda lawsuit,externalchallenging the state’s lethal injection protocol. In it, they said Pike suffered from a blood-clotting condition known as thrombocytosis and said she had “small veins that make insertion of a needle more difficult”.<\/p>\n
After the botched execution, Pike’s attorney Stephen Ferrell said setting an IV line was more difficult than a simple blood draw, adding: “We knew this was coming.”<\/p>\n
Pike’s other attorney, Randy Spivey, said he noticed during the execution that “her right arm was turning purple” and that there was “burning around the sites of the injection” afterwards.<\/p>\n
